Lake Yojoa lies in a highland basin between Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula, framed by cloud forest and the Santa Bárbara mountains. It is a birding destination with hundreds of species, and the surrounding hills are planted with coffee. The Pulhapanzak waterfall and the Cerro Azul Meambar National Park are nearby.

Where to stay

There is no polished boutique scene here, but a few lodges have real character: a coffee and orange plantation with a lakeside pavilion, a brewery with private cabins at the western shore, and lakefront cabins with simple comforts. Book ahead at weekends, when Hondurans flock to the lake.

Good to know

The lake sits about two hours from San Pedro Sula, making it an easy stop between the capital and the north coast. Boat trips at dawn are the best way to see birds. Evenings are cool and rain arrives from May to October.
