Copán Ruinas
A four-star boutique hotel with a garden and terrace, praised for its breakfast and room views, a short way from the center.
Copán Ruinas is a small, pretty town of whitewashed houses and cobbled streets a short walk from the Maya site of Copán, famous for its hieroglyphic stairway and richly carved stelae. Scarlet macaws fly through the park, and the town itself has a relaxed evening life around its main plaza.
The best stays are small. Courtyard hotels in the town center put you within a short walk of restaurants and the shuttle to the ruins, while boutique hotels in the hills above add pools, gardens and views over the valley. A few colonial-style haciendas sit a little outside the town.
Allow a full morning at the ruins, ideally early before the heat, and visit the sculpture museum on site. The town is easy to reach from the Guatemalan border at El Florido. Coffee farms and hot springs make good half-day trips. Humid heat peaks from April to May.
