Guanaja · 10 rooms
A 10-room beachfront boutique hotel at the East End, with ocean-view rooms, a restaurant and a marina.
Guanaja is the most remote of the main Bay Islands, a hilly, pine-covered island rimmed by reef and cays. Hurricane Mitch battered it in 1998 and it has rebuilt slowly, so it has far fewer visitors than Roatán. Most of the population lives on the small cay of Bonacca, a town of houses on stilts.
The few lodges are small and secluded. A 10-room beachfront hotel at the East End has a marina and ocean-view rooms. One resort spreads across a seven-acre cay and is among the most charming in the Bay Islands. A dive-oriented lodge on the northern coast runs intimate excursions, and a boat-only waterfront resort offers all-inclusive stays.
Flights from La Ceiba and Roatán are small and infrequent. Many lodges run on packages, so check what is included. Diving in the marine preserve is superb, with walls and wrecks. Calm weather is most likely from March to June.
