The best destinations in Guinea-Bissau
Guinea-Bissau is a small West African country best known for the Bijagós Islands, a scattering of more than 80 islands with a distinctive matriarchal culture, saltwater hippos and sea turtles. Facilities are basic and travel takes patience, but the islands are among the most beautiful and least visited places in Africa.
The islands
Bubaque is the main island, with beaches and a handful of lodges. Smaller islands such as Rubane and Orango are reached by boat and have a few fishing lodges.
The mainland
Bissau, the capital, is a quiet town with a colonial center. Varela, in the north, is a long, empty beach.
