Choose your setting
São Tomé and Príncipe by setting
São Tomé and Príncipe is Africa's second-smallest country, two forested volcanic islands on the equator with dramatic peaks, black-sand beaches and a history built on cocoa and coffee. Tourism is small and gentle, and the best places to stay are restored plantation houses, known as roças, and a few eco-lodges.
Príncipe
The smaller island is a UNESCO biosphere reserve, with sheer rock spires, rainforest and almost empty beaches. Several roças have been restored as small luxury hotels, and a beach resort on a tiny islet is the island's most popular stay.
São Tomé
The larger island has a sleepy capital of colonial buildings, plantation estates, waterfalls and beaches where turtles nest. Smaller guesthouses and eco-lodges are scattered along the coast and in the countryside.
When to go
The dry season, from June to September, is the most comfortable. Turtles nest between October and March, and the rains arrive from September to May.
