Alexandria
A heritage hotel from the early 1900s overlooking the Mediterranean corniche.
Alexandria was founded by Alexander the Great and later became a cosmopolitan Mediterranean port, home to Greeks, Italians and Jews as well as Egyptians. Its seafront corniche, Belle Époque buildings and cafés give it a character completely different from Cairo.
The city's best stays are historic hotels from the early 20th century and a few small heritage-building hotels near the Graeco-Roman Museum and the Fouad Street area. Rooms with sea views are worth requesting.
Summers are humid and busy with Egyptian holidaymakers, while spring and autumn are more pleasant. Alexandria is about two and a half hours from Cairo by train.
