Siwa Oasis
A sustainable lodge rooted in traditional Siwan architecture, run on solar power and natural cooling.
Siwa is a remote oasis near the Libyan border, a green island of date palms, olive groves and salt lakes in the Western Desert. The Amazigh culture, mud-brick fortress of Shali and the Temple of the Oracle give it a distinct identity from the rest of Egypt.
The best places are eco-lodges built from kershef, a traditional mixture of salt and clay, with candlelight, solar power and food from their own gardens. They sit among the palms or at the edge of the dunes.
Siwa is about a nine-hour drive from Cairo, or a long day from Alexandria. Days are best spent swimming in the springs, exploring the dunes and watching the sunset from the dunes.
