Boutique hotels in Malawi

Malawi's lodges sit on the sandy shore of Lake Malawi, on island retreats and in small riverside camps where walking and boating replace the usual vehicle safari.

20 boutique hotels handpicked

Malawi is a small, friendly country dominated by Lake Malawi, a huge freshwater lake with clear water, hundreds of species of colorful fish and long sandy beaches. Its lodges are small and personal, and the most memorable are on islands or secluded bays.

The lake

Cape Maclear and Mumbo Island, in the south, are known for snorkeling and kayaking, while Likoma Island, far offshore, is the most remote. The central lakeshore at Senga Bay and the northern shore at Nkhata Bay and Chintheche offer beaches and relaxed lodges.

Wildlife

Liwonde and Majete are small but rewarding parks along the Shire River, now restored with elephants, rhinos and lions. Nyika Plateau, in the north, is a high, cool grassland with roan antelope, wildflowers and leopards.

Highlands and cities

Mulanje and Zomba are green highland areas with hiking and tea estates. Lilongwe is the capital, and Blantyre the commercial center, with a few characterful guesthouses.

When to go

May to October is the dry season and best for wildlife. The lake is warm for swimming all year, but the rains from November to April can make roads difficult.
