New York City has more hotel rooms than almost anywhere, but its most memorable stays are in the smaller places downtown. TriBeCa and SoHo hold hotels in converted warehouses and cast-iron buildings, with courtyards, screening rooms and restaurants that locals book too. The East Village and the Lower East Side are younger and livelier, with late-night bars and some of the city's best casual food.
TriBeCa is quiet and residential, SoHo is best for shopping and galleries, and the West Village has the prettiest streets. Staying downtown puts the Hudson River Park, Chinatown and the 9/11 Memorial within walking distance.
Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons; December is festive but busy and expensive. The subway is the fastest way around, and most downtown neighborhoods are easy to explore on foot.
