Santa Fe

Santa Fe, New Mexico, is one of the oldest cities in the United States, founded by the Spanish in 1610 at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Its low adobe buildings, galleries on Canyon Road and the Native American artisans under the Palace of the Governors' portal give it a character found nowhere else in the country.
The area around the Plaza is the most convenient, with museums, restaurants and shops within a few blocks. Canyon Road is quieter and full of galleries, and the hills just outside town offer ranch-style retreats with big views.
Santa Fe sits at about 7,000 feet, so take it easy on the first day. Summer brings Indian Market and the opera; autumn is golden and crisp, and winter has snow and nearby skiing.
