Nantucket
A classic harborfront hotel a short walk from town, with gardens running down to the water.
Nantucket was once the whaling capital of the world, and its town of cobbled streets and grey-shingled captains' houses is one of the best-preserved in America. Beyond the town, moors, cranberry bogs and long beaches cover most of the island, and the villages of Siasconset and Madaket feel even more remote.
Nantucket Town has the restaurants, shops and ferry dock. Hotels further out, on the harbor at Wauwinet or near the beaches, suit travelers who want quiet and are happy to bike or take the island shuttle into town.
The season runs from late May to early October, with the island at its busiest in July and August. Ferries and flights fill up early, and many hotels close in winter. Bikes are the best way around.
