Big Sur is the ninety-mile stretch of California's Highway 1 between Carmel and San Simeon, where the Santa Lucia Mountains drop straight into the Pacific. There are no towns to speak of, just redwood canyons, waterfalls, state parks and a handful of inns, which is exactly the appeal.
Most hotels are clustered in the central section around Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, with a few further south. Options range from luxurious cliff-top retreats to rustic cabins and glamping in the forest.
Highway 1 is sometimes closed by landslides, so check road conditions before you travel. There is little phone signal and few gas stations. Fog is common in early summer; September and October are often the clearest months.
