The Hudson Valley runs north from New York City along the river that gave its name to America's first great school of landscape painting. Historic estates, apple orchards and farm-to-table restaurants dot both banks, along with river towns such as Hudson, Beacon and Rhinebeck and contemporary art at Dia Beacon and Storm King.
The eastern bank, around Rhinebeck and Hudson, is easy to reach by train and full of antiques shops. The western side leads into the Catskills, with hiking trails and quieter villages. Many inns are on farms or large estates.
Autumn is the classic season, when the trees turn in October. Summer brings farmers' markets and swimming holes, and winter is cozy and quiet. A car is useful for exploring.
