Palm Springs
A rustic-modern adults-only lodge built around a pool and a communal barn where meals are served.
Palm Springs became Hollywood's desert playground in the 1940s and 1950s, and the modernist houses and hotels built then still define the town. Low-slung buildings, palm-fringed pools and the San Jacinto Mountains rising straight behind make it one of the most photogenic places in California.
The area around Palm Canyon Drive is central and walkable, with restaurants and vintage shops. Small hotels in the Tennis Club and Movie Colony neighborhoods are quieter, and many are adults-only.
The season runs from October to May, with Modernism Week in February. Summer is extremely hot, often above 110°F, though hotel rates drop. The aerial tramway climbs to cool pine forests in minutes, and Joshua Tree National Park is under an hour away.
