Key West is the last island on the Overseas Highway, closer to Havana than to Miami, and it has always gone its own way. Gingerbread-trimmed Conch houses, banyan trees, Hemingway's house and the nightly sunset gathering at Mallory Square give the island a relaxed, slightly bohemian feel.
Old Town is where most visitors stay, within walking or biking distance of Duval Street, the harbor and the best restaurants. Inns on the quieter side streets avoid the noise of Duval at night.
The best weather is from December to April, which is also the busiest season. Summer is hot and humid, and the hurricane season runs from June to November. Bikes are the best way around the island.
