Kauai is the oldest and greenest of Hawaii's main islands, and the least developed. The Na Pali Coast's fluted cliffs, Waimea Canyon and the taro fields of Hanalei Valley make it one of the most beautiful places in the Pacific, and no building on the island is taller than a palm tree.
Poipu on the south shore is the sunniest base, with calm beaches and good snorkeling. The north shore around Hanalei is wetter, wilder and more beautiful, while the west side around Waimea is quiet and close to the canyon.
Kauai is lovely all year, but winter brings big surf and rain to the north shore. Entry to Ha'ena State Park and the Kalalau Trail requires advance reservations. A car is essential.
