San Cristóbal de las Casas

San Cristóbal de las Casas sits at about 7,200 feet in the mountains of Chiapas, a colonial town of cobbled streets, low tiled roofs and colorful churches. It is the market center for the Tzotzil and Tzeltal Maya communities around it, whose textiles and traditions are a big part of the town's appeal. The Sumidero Canyon and the villages of San Juan Chamula and Zinacantán are nearby.
The historic center, with its pedestrian streets around the cathedral and Santo Domingo, is the most convenient base. Small hotels just outside the center, near Na Bolom, are quieter and greener.
Nights are cold at this altitude, so look for rooms with a fireplace or heating. The dry season from November to April is the best time to visit. Ask before photographing people in the villages.
