Playa del Carmen is the busy hub of the Riviera Maya, halfway between Cancún and Tulum. Its pedestrian Quinta Avenida is lined with restaurants, bars and shops, and ferries cross from here to the island of Cozumel, known for its reefs. The quieter stretches of coast to the north and south hold some of the region's finest small resorts.
Where to stay
In town, stay near the beach and away from the busiest blocks of Fifth Avenue for a calmer night. Small resorts on private beaches north toward Puerto Morelos and south toward Xpu-Ha offer peace and space.

The dry season from November to April has the best weather. Sargassum seaweed can affect the beaches from spring to late summer. The cenotes and ruins of the Riviera Maya are all within easy reach.
