Careyes lies on Jalisco's Costa Alegre, between Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo, and it is one of the most exclusive and unusual places in Mexico. Founded in the 1960s by an Italian banker, it is a private estate of brightly colored villas and "casitas" perched on cliffs above coves, with polo, a turtle conservation program and an arts foundation.
There are few hotels here; most visitors rent villas or stay at the small hotels on the estate and along the coast. The neighboring Cuixmala reserve and Las Alamandas are equally secluded.
The dry season from November to May is the best time to visit. The nearest airports are Manzanillo and Puerto Vallarta, about one and a half and three hours away respectively.
