Tsavo East and Tsavo West together form one of the largest protected areas in Africa. Tsavo East is a flat, dry plain famous for elephants dusted red by the soil, while Tsavo West is volcanic, with lava fields, the clear pools of Mzima Springs and a rhino sanctuary. The parks are wild and uncrowded, a world away from the Mara.

Tsavo is easily combined with the coast, a few hours away. The parks are hot; the dry season from June to October is best.
