Where to stay in Malindi

Malindi was a Swahili trading town when Vasco da Gama arrived in 1498, and a stone pillar he left still stands on the shore. Today it has a strong Italian influence, with pizzerias and gelato shops, as well as a marine national park with coral gardens and turtles. Watamu and the Gede ruins are nearby, as are the sand dunes and estuary of the Sabaki River.

Where to stay

Most hotels are along the beach north and south of town; boutique options are few.

Good to know

Malindi has an airport with flights from Nairobi. The beaches can be affected by silt from the river during the rains.
