Samburu
Moroccan-inspired rooms with private plunge pools above the Ewaso Nyiro river.
The Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba reserves straddle the Ewaso Nyiro river in the semi-arid north. Here you find species absent from the south – Grevy's zebras, reticulated giraffes, gerenuks, beisa oryx and Somali ostriches – along with elephants, lions and leopards that come to drink at the river. The Samburu people, cousins of the Maasai, still live as pastoralists around the reserves.
The best camps are on the riverbanks or in the surrounding community conservancies, such as Kalama and Westgate.
Samburu is about 6 hours by road or an hour by air from Nairobi. It is hot and dry most of the year.
