The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy grew from a cattle ranch into one of Africa's most celebrated conservation stories, now a UNESCO World Heritage site together with Mount Kenya. It protects black and white rhinos, Grevy's zebras and the Big Five, and with few lodges, safaris here are exclusive. Horseback riding, camel walks and helicopter flights to the north are all possible.
Lewa and the neighboring Borana Conservancy have a small number of family-run lodges and private houses.
The conservancy is about an hour's flight from Nairobi. The annual Lewa Safari Marathon raises funds for conservation.
