The Usambara Mountains rise above the northeast Tanzanian plains, a landscape of terraced fields, rainforest and cool, misty ridges. The town of Lushoto serves as the base for walking and cycling among villages, waterfalls and viewpoints over the plains.
Where to stay
Accommodation is simple and small, with only a few lodges set up for visitors. The best have views over the valley and the surrounding forest.
Good to know
Lushoto is about four hours by road from Dar es Salaam, and nights are noticeably cooler than on the coast. The best walking weather is in the dry months, June to October.
