Matemwe lies on Zanzibar's northeast coast, a fishing village facing Mnemba atoll across a lagoon. The beach is wide and calm, and at low tide villagers walk out across the flats to gather seaweed.

Matemwe has a handful of small, quiet properties along the shore, from design-led retreats to simple boutique guesthouses. Snorkeling and diving trips to Mnemba leave from the beach in the mornings.

Good to know

The tide changes the beach dramatically, with deep swimming at high tide and long flats at low. Matemwe is about an hour from Stone Town and quieter in the evenings than Nungwi.
