Mahale
A small, beachfront camp of thatched bandas on the shore of Lake Tanganyika, built for chimp tracking.
Mahale Mountains National Park stands on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, one of the deepest and clearest lakes on earth. Forested mountains drop to white-sand beaches, and the park shelters one of Africa's largest populations of wild chimpanzees, which visitors can track on foot.
There are very few places to stay, all small camps on the lakeshore, reached by light aircraft and boat. Days combine chimpanzee treks in the forest with swimming and kayaking in the lake.
Chimpanzee viewing is best in the dry months, June to October. Mahale is among the most remote destinations in Tanzania, so allow extra days for transfers.
