02
Waiheke Island
A small hotel with sea views and a boat-shed-inspired design, a short walk from Oneroa Beach.
Waiheke Island, in the Hauraki Gulf, is known for its wineries, sheltered beaches and relaxed island pace. It is a 40-minute ferry ride from Auckland, which makes it an easy weekend escape, and its hotels are mostly small lodges and villas on the hills above the sea.
Oneroa and Palm Beach have the beach and cafés; Onetangi is the longest beach and has several wineries; the hillsides inland have vineyard and lodge stays with sea views.
A bus connects the ferry terminal with the main beaches, but a rental car or a tour helps with the wineries. Summer is busy, so book accommodation early.
