Auckland
A small, art-filled guesthouse in a Victorian villa in Ponsonby.
Auckland, spread across volcanic hills and two harbors, is New Zealand's largest city and the first stop for most visitors. Its most characterful hotels are in Ponsonby, a neighborhood of Victorian villas, and in the city center, where heritage buildings have been turned into design hotels. The Waitematā Harbour and the Hauraki Gulf islands are just beyond.
Ponsonby and Grey Lynn are best for restaurants and boutiques; the Britomart area is closest to the ferries and harbor; Parnell has the museum and older houses.
The weather is mild all year. Summer is the busiest time, and the city is a good base for day trips to Waiheke Island and the west-coast beaches.
