Bay of Islands
Private villas on a hilltop above Russell with sweeping views of the bay.
The Bay of Islands, a day's drive north of Auckland, is a sheltered coast of more than 140 islands. It is where Māori and European history meet, at Waitangi and in the old port of Russell, and where sailing, fishing and dolphin trips are the main pastimes. Its best stays include a hilltop villa retreat and a luxury lodge on a sweeping cliff-top estate.
Russell is the most atmospheric base, reached by a short ferry from Paihia; the clifftop lodges farther north offer seclusion and golf.
Summer (December to February) is the best time for the water; winter is mild but wetter. The area is subtropical and often quieter in autumn.
