Akaroa
A small, French-style guesthouse by the Akaroa waterfront.
Akaroa sits inside an ancient volcanic crater on Banks Peninsula, an hour and a half from Christchurch. Founded by French settlers in 1840, it still has French street names, cafés and cottages. The harbor is home to Hector's dolphins, and a few country-house stays are set in the hills above.
Stay in town for restaurants and the waterfront promenade; the hills have quieter, more private options with views.
Cruise ships call in summer and fill the town, so mornings and evenings are the calmest. The drive in over the Summit Road is scenic.
