Kaikōura
A lodge with treehouse suites in a native-bush setting north of Kaikōura.
Kaikōura, on the South Island's northeast coast, is where mountains meet the sea. Sperm whales feed offshore all year, fur seals bask on the rocks and the town is known for crayfish. A few boutique lodges sit above the coast or among farmland, with the Seaward Kaikōura range behind.
Choose a lodge in the countryside for space and mountain views, or a small hotel in town for walkable access to the whale-watching base.
Whale-watching is possible year-round, but rough seas can cancel trips, so allow a spare day. The area was affected by the 2016 earthquake but has recovered.
