Abel Tasman
Luxury accommodation next to Abel Tasman National Park, with Japanese-style suites.
Abel Tasman, New Zealand's smallest national park, is a coast of golden sand, granite headlands and turquoise water. The Abel Tasman Coast Track runs through it, and kayaks and water taxis let visitors reach the coves. Lodging is limited inside the park, but a few lodges sit within it or on its edge.
A beach lodge inside the park is the most memorable; Japanese-inspired suites and cottages on the edge are close to the trailheads.
The weather is best from December to March. Book huts and campsites in advance in summer; the park is a day trip from Nelson.
