Ishigaki
A beachfront hideaway on the quiet west coast, with a pool and garden.
Ishigaki lies far to the southwest of Okinawa's main island, closer to Taiwan than to Tokyo. Its coral reefs are among Japan's best for snorkeling and diving, and Kabira Bay's turquoise water is one of the country's most famous views. Ferries link it to the smaller Yaeyama islands, including Taketomi with its traditional red-tiled village.
Ishigaki town is practical for restaurants and ferries. The west and north coasts are quieter and more scenic, and a car is useful.
The best weather runs from April to June and October to November; typhoons can strike from July to October. Swimming is not allowed in Kabira Bay itself.
