Kanazawa
A traditional inn in a patch of woodland in the city center, with antique furnishings and a teahouse.
Kanazawa escaped bombing in the Second World War, and its historic districts survive remarkably intact. Kenroku-en, one of Japan's most celebrated gardens, sits beside the castle, while the Higashi Chaya teahouse district and the Nagamachi samurai quarter keep their wooden façades. The city is also famous for gold leaf, lacquerware and fresh seafood from Omicho Market.
Stay near the castle and Kenroku-en or the Higashi Chaya district to walk everywhere. The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art is a short stroll from the center.
The Hokuriku shinkansen puts Kanazawa about two and a half hours from Tokyo. Winter brings crab season and occasional snow, which suits the gardens beautifully.
