Takayama is a mountain town in the Hida region whose old quarter, Sanmachi Suji, is lined with preserved Edo-period merchant houses, sake breweries and craft shops. Its spring and autumn festivals, with ornate floats, are among Japan's most beautiful, and its two morning markets are a pleasant start to any day.
Staying in town lets you walk to the old quarter and the riverside markets. Ryokan on the edge of town or in the hills offer more space, hot-spring baths and dinners built around Hida beef.
Takayama pairs naturally with Shirakawa-go, about 50 minutes away by bus, and with Kanazawa. Winters are cold and snowy.
