Okinawa was the independent Ryukyu Kingdom until the 19th century, and its castles, food, music and red-tiled houses still set it apart from the rest of Japan. The main island has clear water and coral reefs along its western coast, the lively capital Naha in the south and the forested Yanbaru region in the north.
The west coast around Onna and Nago has the best beaches. Naha is convenient for food and nightlife, and the north is wilder and quieter.
A car makes exploring much easier. The sea is warm enough to swim from April to October, but the typhoon season runs from roughly July to October.
