Tokyo is a vast city made of distinct neighborhoods, and the best way to enjoy it is to pick one and explore it on foot. Its boutique hotels are fewer than its grand towers, but they are memorable: a modern ryokan with a rooftop hot-spring bath, design hotels with buzzing ground-floor bars, and restored buildings in the old merchant quarter of Nihonbashi.
Shibuya and Harajuku suit travelers who want shopping, cafés and nightlife. Marunouchi and Otemachi, by the Imperial Palace gardens, are calm and well connected. Nihonbashi and Asakusa have a more traditional feel, with old shops, shrines and riverside walks.
The subway is excellent, so location matters less than in many cities. Rooms are often compact; ask for exact sizes when booking. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons.
