Niseko, on Hokkaido, receives some of the lightest and most reliable snow on earth, and its linked ski areas draw skiers from around the world from December to March. In summer it turns green, with hiking, rafting and cycling around the perfectly shaped Mount Yotei.
Hirafu is the main village, with the widest choice of restaurants and bars. Niseko Village and Hanazono are quieter and more resort-like, while the countryside around holds a few secluded ryokan with their own hot springs.
The nearest airport is New Chitose, about two to three hours by road. January and February have the deepest snow and the highest prices; book a year ahead for the New Year period.
