Hakone
A small, art-filled hot-spring ryokan by Hoshino Resorts in the quiet highlands of Sengokuhara.
Hakone has been Tokyo's favorite hot-spring escape for centuries. Its volcanic valleys feed dozens of onsen, and its hills hold art museums, cedar-lined walking paths and Lake Ashi, where Mount Fuji appears on clear mornings.
Miyanoshita and Gora are the historic heart, with old inns and the open-air Hakone Open-Air Museum. Sengokuhara is quieter, with pampas grass meadows and newer ryokan. Most visitors stay one or two nights to enjoy the baths and kaiseki dinners.
The Hakone Freepass covers trains, cable cars, buses and lake boats. Weekends and holidays are busy with visitors from Tokyo; midweek stays are calmer. Fuji views are most reliable in winter.
