Benesse House

Naoshima

Rooms within and around Tadao Ando's museum on the shore, where guests can see the art after closing time.

Naoshima was a quiet fishing island until the Benesse foundation turned it into one of the world's great art destinations. Museums by Tadao Ando, Yayoi Kusama's polka-dot pumpkins on the shore, and art installations in old village houses make it a place to linger for at least a night.

Where to stay

The island's accommodation is limited, and the most famous option is inside the Benesse House museum itself. Honmura and Miyanoura villages have small inns and guesthouses. Neighboring Teshima and Inujima continue the art trail.

Good to know

Many museums close on Mondays, and the Chichu Art Museum requires timed tickets booked in advance. Ferries run from Uno and Takamatsu.
