Aspen
Aspen's only ski-in, ski-out hotel, at the foot of the gondola, with an outstanding wine program.
Aspen is a 19th-century silver-mining town turned into one of the world's most glamorous ski resorts, with four mountains, Victorian brick buildings and a cultural life to match its slopes. In summer, the Aspen Music Festival, the Ideas Festival and hiking around the Maroon Bells draw as many visitors as winter.
The compact downtown is walkable and close to the Aspen Mountain gondola, with galleries, restaurants and boutiques. Snowmass, a short drive away, is more family-oriented with more ski-in, ski-out options.
The ski season runs from late November to April, with the busiest weeks around Christmas and Presidents' Day. Summer is beautiful and slightly cheaper. Aspen sits at nearly 8,000 feet, so drink water and pace yourself.
