Sabi Sand (Kruger)
Richard Branson's reserve with a Rock Lodge on a hilltop and a Safari Lodge on stilts by a riverbed.
The Sabi Sand Game Reserve is a group of private reserves on the western edge of Kruger National Park, with no fence between them, so animals roam freely. Generations of careful guiding have made its leopards remarkably relaxed around vehicles, and the Big Five are seen regularly. Lodges offer morning and evening game drives in open vehicles, bush walks and night sightings that are impossible in the national park itself.
The lodges here are among the finest in Africa, from family-run camps on the Sand River to contemporary glass-and-stone suites with private plunge pools.
The dry winter (May to September) is best for game viewing; summer brings green landscapes, newborn animals and afternoon storms. The area is in a malaria zone. Small flights land at the lodges' airstrips or at Skukuza.
