French Huguenots settled this valley in the 1680s, and Franschhoek still calls itself South Africa's culinary capital. Its main street is lined with restaurants and galleries, while the surrounding estates offer tastings and the Wine Tram connects many of them.
The best hotels sit on wine estates in the valley or on its slopes, many with gardens, pools and mountain views. Babylonstoren and Boschendal, on the road to Paarl and Stellenbosch, are farm estates with acclaimed gardens and kitchens.
Franschhoek is about an hour from Cape Town. Harvest time, from February to April, is especially lively; winter is quieter, cooler and ideal for long lunches by the fire.
