Plettenberg Bay is the Garden Route's most glamorous beach town, with three long beaches, the Robberg Nature Reserve peninsula and seasonal whales and dolphins. Inland, the forests and the private game reserves along the N2 offer something different, and the gorges and coastal trails of Tsitsikamma are close by.
The town has a classic clifftop hotel; most other boutique options are country lodges and polo estates in the Crags area, a short drive east.
December and January are very busy with South African holidaymakers. Southern right whales visit the bay from July to November.
