About two hours north of Cape Town, Paternoster is one of South Africa's oldest fishing villages, its fishermen's cottages painted white with blue shutters. The coast here is wild and windswept, with granite boulders, long sandy beaches and the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve. The village has also become a dining destination, with kitchens built around foraged and local seafood. In spring the surrounding countryside bursts into wildflowers.
Small guesthouses on Bek Bay and in the village are the best way to enjoy it.
The wildflower season runs from August to September. Water is cold; this is a place for walks, food and sunsets rather than swimming.
