Managua

Managua is a spread-out capital rebuilt after the 1972 earthquake, with no real historic center and few sights. Most visitors pass through for a night on arrival or departure, and a good small hotel in a quiet district makes that night far more pleasant.
The more comfortable hotels are in the residential and commercial districts around Metrocentro and the Zona Rosa, away from the congested center. Colonial-style hotels with courtyard fountains and small pools offer a calm landing, and a handful of design hotels have opened in recent years.
Managua is hot and traffic is heavy, so use a hotel-arranged taxi after dark. The airport is about 20 minutes from most of these hotels. Granada is an hour away and León about an hour and a half, so most travelers continue straight on. The lakefront Malecón is the easiest place for a walk.
