Popoyo is the name of both a village and one of Central America's most reliable surf breaks, on a stretch of coast with long beaches, rocky points and wide skies. Between sessions there is little to do but swim, practice yoga and watch the sunset, which is exactly the appeal.
The hotels are small and mostly beachfront: minimalist surf lodges, private oceanfront cabanas and villa-style boutique hotels with pools. Some sit right on the break, others a few minutes' drive inland, which can be quieter and cheaper. Punta Teonoste, on its own beach a little farther north, is the luxury pick.
The nearest town with shops is Rivas, so bring essentials. Roads are rough, so a high-clearance vehicle or arranged transfer from Managua airport (about two hours) helps. Swells are largest from May to November; the dry season brings offshore winds.
