León
A luxury boutique hotel in the city center, built on the site of former convent buildings and designed to respect the colonial architecture.
02
León
A well-regarded four-star hotel in a colonial building near the cathedral, often recommended as the city's best.
03
León
A mid-range hotel with thatched-roof bungalows and a large pool.
León is the intellectual heart of Nicaragua and home to the largest cathedral in Central America, whose white rooftop can be walked for views across the city to the Maribios volcanoes. The streets are lined with murals, galleries and cafes, and the mood is more bohemian and less polished than Granada's.
The best hotels are in restored colonial houses within a few blocks of the cathedral, with high ceilings, thick walls and a courtyard or small pool to retreat to in the midday heat. Staying in the center lets you walk to the museums, the Rubén Darío house and the evening plazas.
León is hot, especially from March to May. Volcano boarding on Cerro Negro and the beaches of Las Peñitas and Poneloya make good day trips. Ask whether a hotel has air conditioning and a quiet room away from the street.
