Tola is a municipality on Nicaragua's southern Pacific coast that takes in the beaches of Playa Manzanillo, La Redonda and Guacalito. It has become the country's high-end beach district, with a handful of resorts built on former ranchland and long stretches of undeveloped shoreline.

Where to stay

The stays are bigger and more polished than elsewhere in Nicaragua. Mukul, part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, has 37 villas and bohíos on Playa Manzanillo. Rancho Santana, a private-beach community, and Aqua Wellness Resort, a rustic-luxe property on a slope above Redonda Bay, offer alternatives.

Good to know

Most guests fly into Managua and transfer for about two hours; some resorts arrange private flights. Golf, horseback riding and surf lessons are all on offer. The dry season from December to April is the best time, with warm days and steady offshore breezes.
