The Corn Islands lie about 70 kilometers off Nicaragua's Caribbean coast. Big Corn has a handful of roads, small beach hotels and a Creole English-speaking community, while Little Corn, a short boat ride away, has no cars at all, just footpaths between palm-shaded beaches, dive shops and lodges.
On Big Corn, small beach hotels line the coves, with the best swimming at Sally Peachie and around the south end. On Little Corn the stays are rustic and eco-minded, many powered by solar panels, and a boutique resort with beachfront bungalows sets the high end.
Flights from Managua are short but limited, and boats from Big Corn to Little Corn run twice daily and can be rough. Diving and snorkeling are the main activities. Bring cash, as cards and ATMs are unreliable. The drier months are February to May.
